In 1867, the Frankford Circle of Honor was donated to the “Col. Baker Association”, which was established sometime following Baker’s death at the Battle of Balls Bluff. In 1878, the plot was deeded to the Kearny Post #55, Grand Army of the Republic, and sometime later on July 4th, the Monument was dedicated in a major memorial ceremony attended by Maj. Gen. George Meade, Commodore Selfridge, Marine Bands, and several other notable organizations.
Time and the elements have not been kind to this once imposing monument to our Civil War Heritage. Corrective action must be taken before it is too late to save this Monument, which resides at the heart of our Civil War Community.
The Monument is 22 feet high and initially cost $2,500 to erect, the funds having been raised by Company D, 71st P.V.I. and the grateful citizens of the 23rd Ward. There were nearly 150 inscribed names of veterans from the neighborhood that had served in many Volunteer Regiments. These units included: 20th, 26Th, 28th, 30th, 70th, 71st, 112th, 114th, 121st, and 208th P.V.I.; 1st and 3rd N.J. Vols; 5th New York; 15th Illinois; and the 6th & 8th Cavalry. There are also 33 Union Veterans interred in unmarked graves in the surrounding Circle of Honor.
